Aitor de MENDIZABAL

Born in Caracas in 1949, Aïtor de Mendizabal returns at the age of nine to his native Province of Guipuzcoa. At a very young age, he feels drawn to the arts, but it is only in 1976, after classical studies, that he becomes a sculptor.

Obtaining the First Prize at the Young Sculptors Competition in San Sebastian at the age of 30 could have marked a high point of artistic acclaim: for him it is only a departure point, revealing his desire to grow and to question himself mercilessly.

Starting again from zero, he undertakes a demanding training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and Carrare. Studying there for ten years , with passion, he then ”moves” calmly Recognition rewards this courageous journey in the form of prestigious exhibits (Rome, Florence from figurative to abstract sculpture one which is lyrical, organic and inspired by nature. , Milan, Brussels, Biarritz…)

In addition to his powerful career, de Mendizabal also continues to reveal his talents in painting and drawing, demonstrating a sensitivity which reconciles different art forms. In this he is not alone, with the likes of : Michelangelo, Rodin, Chillida preceding him…

His sketches, ink drawings and paintings without a doubt are more than preparatory works for sculpture, they have their own originality and strength, they stand on their own in a delicately and sometimes enigmatic way. They draw in the art lover who discovers the painter behind the great sculptor.

Necessarily and naturally Basque, Aïtor de Mendizabal was born in Venezuela, sojourned in Switzerland, immersed himself in Italian culture, loves Spain and today lives in France: A Basque artist of the world!
