Javier OBESOErrenteria (Guipuzkoa) 1952 Xavier Obeso is a renowned engraver, painter and multi-faceted artist whose works have been exhibited in the world (United States of America, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain, Germany...). Xavier Obeso is amongst a few core artists who have continued to create and champion representative art despite the pressures exerted by contrary prevailing trends in art. Even when abstract expressionism was at its heights over the last century, he continued to use form and the language of figuration. Over his career, Obeso has explored various artistic and stylistic paths, abandoning certain forms when he felt that they no longer offered creative possibilities for him. His search for new means of expression have taken him from surrealism to hyperrealism. In fact, the specialized art review REVISTART has called Obeso “one of the most important hyperrealist artist in the Spanish art world”. As the works presented here reveal, the artist explores questions appertaining to anthropology social criticism, and religion—everything related to the human and the divine. It is through the extensive language that he has elaborated via symbols that he expresses the types of metaphysical questions that we ask ourselves. Here at Urdax Cloister, we choose to qualify Obeso as a “philosophical realist”, since in his works he blends his two passions—art and philosophy—seemingly effortlessly.
